Three Volusia County Defendants Indicted by Grand Jury

DELAND – The Volusia County Grand Jury was convened to hear several cases.

The first case was that of Austin Kersey. The defendant is accused of breaking into a man’s DeLand home and strangling him to death on May 15, 2026.

The second case was that of Trent Prather. The defendant is accused of recording himself sexually abusing a nine-year-old victim for a year.

The third case was that of Cameron Sheffield. The defendant is accused of sexually abusing a victim for over a year when she was between the ages of 10 and 11.

The indictments were handed down on Thursday afternoon. Kersey was charged with First-Degree Murder and Burglary with a Battery. Prather was charged with 15 counts of Sexual Battery on victim less than 12 years of age, two counts of Lewd/Lascivious Molestation on victim less than 12 years of age, Lewd/Lascivious Exhibition on victim less than 16 years of age, and 18 counts of Promoting Sexual Performance by a Child. Sheffield was charged with three counts of Sexual Battery on victim less than 12 years of age and Lewd/Lascivious Molestation on victim less than 12 years of age.

The DeLand Police Department investigated the case against Kersey. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office investigated the case against Prather. The Daytona Beach Police Department investigated the case against Sheffield.
