DOB: 09/19/1999

Case Number: 2021 305093 CFDB

Volusia County Inmate Convicted in Attack on Correctional Officer

DAYTONA BEACH โ€“ After a three-day trial, a Volusia County jury found defendant Trevon Miller guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer and Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer.

Miller was convicted of Armed Burglary, Armed Kidnapping, and Sexual Battery by Force or Deadly Weapon in 2016 in Polk County and was serving a 30-year sentence at Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach.

During the early morning hours of September 27, 2021, prison video surveillance showed Miller hide behind a door in the laundry room.

Shortly thereafter, when Correctional Officer Paul Lane walked into the laundry room, the defendant ambushed him and stabbed him in the face, back, and neck with a homemade knife.

Miller eventually stopped attacking Officer Lane and returned to his dormitory, where he was quickly handcuffed by another correctional officer. Officer Lane recovered from his injuries at the hospital.

โ€œCorrectional officers spend their days amongst some of the most violent and dangerous offenders,โ€ State Attorney R.J. Larizza said about the case. โ€œThey deserve our respect, praise, and protection. Let this case be a warning to other inmates that they will suffer greatly when they harm our correctional officers.โ€

The Florida Department of Corrections, Office of the Inspector General investigated the case. Managing Assistant State Attorney Erica Kane and Chief Assistant State Attorney John Reid successfully tried the case for the State of Florida. The Honorable Kathryn Weston presided over the case and is set to pronounce sentence on May 8, 2026. The defendant faces mandatory life in prison as a Prison Releasee Reoffender and Habitual Violent Felony Offender.
