Labrada Machado Sentenced in Edgewater Police Officerโs Brutal Murder
DAYTONA BEACH โ During a hearing this afternoon, defendant Eduardo Labrada Machado pled no contest to First-Degree Murder (Firearm) and was sentenced to life in prison.
On September 15, 2025, Labrada Machado was working a shift at an Ormond-by-the-Sea convenience store.
Shortly after off-duty Edgewater Police Officer David Jewell walked into the store, video surveillance shows Labrada Machado leave and take a jacket out of the passenger side of his vehicle.
When the defendant walked back into the store, he immediately pulled out a gun from the jacket and opened fire on Officer Jewell at the front counter.
After he fell to the ground, Labrada Machado stood over Officer Jewell and shot him several more times in the head.
Officer Jewell was shot a total of 20 times and died at the scene. The defendant was arrested shortly after leaving the convenience store.
Labrada Machado told detectives that he was having a โrough startโ to his day and thought about shooting Officer Jewell, who lived nearby and frequented the store, during his drive to work.
“The stark brutality of this case shocked our entire community,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said about the case against Labrada Machado. “The defendantโs plea ensures he will never be released from prison. I hope that avoiding a long and painful trial process will give the family some measure of peace. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.โ
The Volusia Sheriffโs Office investigated the case. Assistant State Attorney Andrew Urbanak successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the State of Florida. The Honorable Elizabeth Blackburn heard the case and imposed sentence.
