Two Volusia County Defendants Indicted by Grand Jury

DELAND – The Volusia County Grand Jury was convened today to hear two cases.

The first case was that of Gregory Harris. The defendant is accused of committing multiple child sexual abuse crimes over two years.

The second case was that of Scott Gardner. The defendant is accused of leaving his 18-month-old son in a hot truck for three hours on June 6, 2025, while he got a haircut and drank at a bar in Ormond Beach. Medical personnel estimate that the child had been dead for at least an hour by the time he arrived at the hospital.

The indictments were handed down on Wednesday morning. Harris was charged with two counts of Sexual Battery on victim less than 12 years of age, two counts of Lewd/Lascivious Molestation on victim less than 12 years of age and Lewd/Lascivious Exhibition on victim less than 12 years of age. Gardner was charged with Felony First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse and Neglect of a Child Causing Great Bodily Harm.

The case against Harris was investigated by the Port Orange Police Department with assistance from the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky. The case against Gardner was investigated by the Ormond Beach Police Department and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
